原I really don't think this name can get over Mercedes Benz - the name might have come first, but the fact is that the first thing people think of when they hear this name is "like the car?". It probably doesn't help that some people do pick this name from the car manufacturer. It's a pity, really, because it sound quite charming.

原When I was a young girl in elementary school, I went to a play. One of the main actresses, after the play was over, was introduced. She was beautiful and elegant; her name was Mercedes. I always wanted to name my daughter that, this 20 years later I still want to. But, as an adult I have always drove a Mercedes so I am worried people would think I am naming my child after my possessions. So, unfortunately, I don't think I will get to name my daughter that.I have also had people make references that the name Mercedes is a "stripper" name. And they associate it with the ghetto.More reasons not to use it. But, I will always remember that beautifully elegant girl in that play named Mercedes.

原I have always liked this name. To me it seems one of the most refined and elegant feminine names out there. It's sophisticated but has a less formal nickname (Mercy), it flows beautifully and unlike a lot of Spanish names it isn't overly unusual or difficult to pronounce for an English speaker. It's a shame about the association with the car. Too many people would think of that immediately and a child with this name would probably never hear the end of it. Even so, I'm not so sure I wouldn't be tempted to use it anyway, it's that good. For certain it would make a fine middle name.

People call me either one, mostly Mercy though. I've been called Cede or Cedes randomly by a couple people, I liked it. One of my old boyfriends called me Cedes before we started going out and sometimes during, I felt special since no one else called me that. :P People say that I fit my name when I go by Mercy. Technically it *is* my name since Mercedes is the Spanish word for Mercy. I read it and was like "SCORE!" Hehe. I would recommend this name, it's really pretty. The trick is to be introduced with one of the nicknames and gradualy let people know your real name is Mercedes. It tended to decrease the amount of annoying comments very successfully! And the first thing they say is usually that it's very pretty or something else really nice. (:

原Although a car was named for a girl named Mercedes and having this name might make people think your parents wanted to afford one, I really like this name. In fact I named my step daughter Mercedes. I like the meaning of the name which I understand to be merciful is the deity. Also, I love the nickname Sadie.

It was HELL growing up with it, but I like it better now, and it has always been helpful in letting me know in advance who was worth my time--if anyone I'm introduced to cracks a lame car joke (no matter how clever you think you are, trust me, I've heard it) I know not to bother. 原In Spain (with the z=th pronunciation) Mercedes is a very popular name, but now it's kind of dated. It's more of a "mom name", if you will. In the 19th century there was a Queen Mercedes who lived a beautiful and very sad love story with the king as she died at 18.
