原This is among my favorite names. As was said above, it means victory in Sanskrit. Most Indians would pronounce it like JAH-yah, but that might be difficult for an anglophone, in which case I would recommend the equally gorgeous pronunciation of JIE-yah. It's hard to believe that this name isn't hideously popular, I mean, it has a fantastic sound, meaning, and look. Whatever. I'm happy that it's remained in relative obscurity.
原I have two different friends who are both named this and one of them said her name was a variation of Gaia, which is the earth in Greek mythology (I think) and the other said that she was named after Mt. Jayapura in New Guinea.
